Students in Money Management (SIMM) recently wrapped up their annual trip to New York City, where members had the chance to connect with industry leaders and experience firsthand the fast-paced world of finance. During the trip, students visited Bessemer Trust, RBC Capital Markets, Kayenta, Simon Quick Advisors, and the iconic New York Stock Exchange, gaining valuable insight into the finance industry through conversations with alumni and professionals.
Each visit offered a unique look into areas such as private wealth management, capital markets and financial technology, helping members understand how classroom concepts apply in real-world settings.
The trip also featured an evening networking event, where more than 50 alumni and students came together to share career experiences, advice and stories of their time at St. Bonaventure. The event highlighted the strength of the Bona community and celebrated the connections that continue to make the Bona family so special.
“It was an incredible chance to speak with alumni and build genuine connections. Visiting several different firms, each with their own focus, helped me see the variety of career paths within the industry and think more clearly about what direction I want to take,” said Gunnar Bolton, a senior finance major.
SIMM is also happy to announce that there has been a major addition to the Swan Business School with the opening of a brand new Bloomberg Room, complete with multiple TVs and 10 state-of-the-art Bloomberg terminals. These terminals give students access to real-time financial data, market analytics and research tools widely used across the finance industry. The room provides students with great hands-on experience and a chance to work with industry-leading technology that brings classroom lessons to life.
The project was made possible through the generosity of alumni donors, whose continued support helps create new opportunities and enhance the learning environment for all business students.
For SIMM, the addition of the new Bloomberg Room marks a major improvement, as the group previously had access to only one terminal. With ten now available, members can work simultaneously on research, portfolio analysis and market tracking, which will greatly enhance collaboration and efficiency. SIMM leaders plan to incorporate the terminals into club meetings and class lessons, giving students a chance to apply what they learn in real time while managing the club’s nearly $800,000 investment portfolio. This expansion not only strengthens SIMM’s investment process but also creates valuable learning opportunities for all students involved in the business school.
To stay up to date with all of SIMM’s activities and events, be sure to visit our website at bonasimm.org and follow SIMM on LinkedIn. If you’re on campus, stop by Swan 101 for Friday Forums, held weekly and featuring a guest speaker from the finance industry. In October, some speakers included Laurie Kruppa, Oscar Yanez, Steve May and Kate Torpey, who represented the Association of Ship Brokers and Agents (ASBA). Kate was joined by two other ASBA members via Zoom, and together they spoke about the shipping industry, its current trends, and career paths. This gave students a valuable perspective, especially those exploring internships and jobs beyond traditional finance roles. The ASBA has also been a generous supporter of SIMM, donating funds to help develop a maritime-focused investment fund that targets stocks within the shipping sector and related industries.
