St. Bonaventure’s hockey team played two games against Ithaca this weekend with Ithaca taking the first game in a shootout 6-5 and the Bonnies taking the second game 3-2.
For the Bonnies, it was their second win on the season, and it puts their record at 2-3-1. Forward Andrew Farnham and defenseman Michael Johnson were able to find the back of the net in the second period to put the Bonnies ahead 3-1 before Ithaca scored to cut it to the eventual final score of 3-2.
Even though they were only able to come away with one win out of the three games, the first was an 11-6 loss to Cortland, the chances are there and they are attacking the net, according to Farnham.
“The last couple of games we have been generating a lot of shots,” Farnham said. “I think we had 52 shots on net (against Ithaca) so we are definitely shooting the puck more, which is good for us.”
Johnson has been impressed with the team’s play as of late against what he called some good competition, he said.
“We played really well as a team for all three games,” Johnson said. “We were actually winning on Friday (against Cortland) 5-3, but they just came on really strong in the third period.”
Johnson scored his second goal of the season on the power play in the win on Sunday.
“Tyler Gokey cycled the puck around the net, and I was standing right in front where he made a perfect pass right on my stick,” Johnson said. “I just tried to get it on net to create a rebound, and it ended up going in.”
Farnham scored his second goal of the season as well, but according to him, he got a little lucky to come away with a goal on the play.
“I broke to the net and he [Ben Solnick] gave it to me,” Farnham said. “I passed it, and it went off the defenseman’s skate and came back to me. I tucked it through the goalie’s five hole.”
The Bonnies currently sit in fourth place out of seven teams in the NorthEast Collegiate Hockey League.
The next game is at 8:30 tonight at home against Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
