The National Basketball Association postseason began Saturday, April 18, and I believe the Oklahoma City Thunder will capture its second consecutive NBA title.

Looking at how the Western Conference playoffs could unfold, I believe the San Antonio Spurs will defeat the red-hot Denver Nuggets in seven games in the semifinals. Denver boasts one of the league’s top offenses and finished 3-1 in the regular-season series. However, it also owns one of the weakest defenses among Western Conference playoff teams. I trust San Antonio to perform on both ends of the floor.

I predict the Oklahoma City Thunder will defeat the Los Angeles Lakers in five games to advance to the conference finals. Injuries to guards Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves during the regular season weakened the Lakers’ chances of competing this postseason.

I expect the Oklahoma City Thunder to defeat the San Antonio Spurs in the Western Conference finals by one game. This could be one of the most exciting series of the postseason, featuring two of the league’s most talented rosters.

Victor Wembanyama, the 22-year-old Spurs center and top pick in the 2023 NBA draft, is a finalist for the league’s Most Valuable Player Award and won Defensive Player of the Year. Thunder guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander is also in the MVP race.

Wembanyama nearly led France to a gold medal at the 2024 Olympics, falling to the United States by 11 points. I believe the Spurs present the biggest threat to Oklahoma City, but their lack of postseason experience after missing the playoffs six straight seasons could prove decisive.

Looking at how the Eastern Conference playoffs could unfold, I have the Cleveland Cavaliers defeating the Detroit Pistons in a toss up to reach the Eastern Conference finals. Pistons guard Cade Cunningham may be the best player in the series, but Detroit’s offense has been inconsistent beyond him.

Cleveland has shown vulnerabilities in its perimeter defense. This series could hinge on which weakness gives first. I will take Cleveland’s rim protection, anchored by forward Evan Mobley and center Jarrett Allen, along with a backcourt led by guards Donovan Mitchell and James Harden, to get the job done.

I also have the Boston Celtics getting revenge against the New York Knicks. Celtics forward Jayson Tatum has looked strong since returning from the achilles injury he suffered in this same series last postseason. New York won in six games. This matchup feels evenly balanced, but I have Boston winning in seven games.

The Cleveland Cavaliers have not reached the conference finals since 2018, and the Boston Celtics swept the season series. I will take the Boston Celtics, the 2024 NBA champions, in six games, because of their experience, defensive versatility and elite perimeter shooting. Cleveland’s struggles defending the perimeter could prove decisive.

However, I believe the Thunder will defeat the Celtics in six games in the NBA Finals. Oklahoma City has been the best team in the league for two seasons. They are led by MVP frontrunner and Clutch Player of the Year Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, along with projected All-NBA forward Chet Holmgren. Its perimeter defense and frontcourt presence could overwhelm Boston on both ends of the floor. The Thunder would become the first team to win back-to-back titles since the Golden State Warriors in 2018.
