The St. Bonaventure University men’s track team opened its outdoor season on Friday and Saturday at the Marty Pushkin Invitational hosted by West Virginia University.
Cameron Ogletree, a freshman computer science major, set a program record in the 100 meters with a time of 11.52.
Ogletree highlighted the team’s determination, and he looks to break his record again this Saturday at the Jim Taylor Duals.
“For my goals this upcoming meet, I want to break my 100-meter school record and post a big personal-best jump in the 200,” Ogletree said. “I felt we did great last meet. We posted multiple school records and personal records. I want everybody to know that no matter what obstacles are thrown at us, we still find a way to find the light.”
Ogletree was part of the 4×200-meter relay team that won a regional championship at Patrick Henry High School in Roanoke, Virginia, and is a school-record holder in the event.
Henry Morris, a junior management major, broke his existing program record in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 56.58. He placed second in the race.
Morris broke the record last season at the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships with a time of 57.02.
Joshua Lopez, a junior economics major, recorded a personal-best time of 4:09.07 in the 1500 meters, which he hopes to continue to improve upon.
“I am striving to break four in the 1500,” said Lopez. “It will be my second time running the event. I am looking forward to mixing things up and getting good reps in to sharpen my racing tactics in the event. I will be doubling back later with the 800 which I have not raced in in two years. It used to be my main event. I’m looking forward to returning to my main event and hopefully posting a strong time and a win.
Lopez emphasized the team’s effort and support for one another as a catalyst for its success.
“I think our team did a great job of supporting each other, and we raced hard at West Virginia,” said Lopez. “I think if we keep taking advantage of the opportunities presented to us, this season should shape up very well for us. This team is young. A lot of our athletes are trying new events, and they are trying to find their home within the collegiate running distances. There should be a lot to watch and look out for as the season progresses.”
Ethan Luce, a senior business major, placed fourth in a 36-runner field with a personal-best time of 15:26.36 in the 5,000 meters on Friday, which ranks sixth in program history.
Luce set a personal-best time of 32:00.42 in the 10,000 meters at the Colonial Relays last season and qualified for the Atlantic 10 Championships, where he posted a time of 33:11.57.
Casey Malloy, a senior finance major, and Sam Tomm, a sophomore sports media major, finished right behind Luce. Malloy posted a time of 15:28.51, while Tomm finished in 15:32.78. Both recorded program top-10 marks.
Malloy qualified for the outdoor Atlantic 10 Championships for the 5,000 meters last season.
The Bonnies travel to Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania to race at the Jim Taylor Duals on Saturday.
