Despite getting off to an early start in the first quarter, the St. Bonaventure women’s basketball team fell to George Washington Wednesday night, 69-48 in The Charles E. Smith Center. This is the Bonnies’ second loss to GW in conference play this season. GW’s only two wins in the conference are to St. Bonaventure.

Bonaventure (4-18, 1-10 A-10) shot 50% from three in the first quarter, going 3-6 from the arch. Bonas senior guard Nadechka Laccen had two of these threes, as well as one 3-pointer from redshirt junior Isabellah Middleton.

The Bonnies led the game up until the 2nd quarter when the Revolutionaries (9-14, 2-9 A-10) took over.

St. Bonaventure tied the game briefly at 15-15 soon after falling behind, but they couldn’t hold on. The rest of the game belonged to GW from there. They took off on a seven-point lead going into the third quarter.

GW knocked down 21 points in the 4th quarter alone in its victory. Middleton scored a career-high 21 points in the loss, also making her the leading scorer for Bonaventure. Laccen was second in scoring for the Bonnies with 15 points.

GW sophomore guard Nya Lok led the Revolutionaries in scoring with 18 points in their win, joining two other players who shot over 50% from the field. GW freshman guard Mayowa Taiwo shot 57% from the field, along with senior guard Asjah Inniss and Lok who each shot 50% from the field.

The only St. Bonaventure player who came close to shooting 50% was Middleton who shot 42% from the field.

St. Bonaventure shot 28.9 % from the field as a team in comparison to GW’s 43.5%.

St. Bonaventure had 23 turnovers in its loss compared to GW’s 16. The Revolutionaries outrebounded the Bonnies 38-21. The Revolutionaries also outscored Bonaventure 24-9 off of turnovers.

“Some games we don’t take care of the ball very well,” head coach Jim Crowley said. “And then in other games we will take care of the ball but get beat on some rebounds.”

GW had three players shooting over 50% from the field. Taiwo shot 57 % from the field, along with Inniss and Lok who each shot 50% from the field.

“We are dribbling a little more than passing,” Crowley said, “Sometimes when you’re pressing when you fall behind people tend to try to make a play themselves and we are getting better and better at trusting the offense.”

Crowley reflects on where this Bonaventure team can improve on offensive momentum.

“It may sound simple, but we are missing some opportunities at the rim,” said Crowley. “I think the way we start sometimes puts us in a hole.”

St. Bonaventure finished out this game with six assists compared to GW’s 15. This is a two-assist improvement from the Bonnies’ last game against Davidson.

The Bonnies continue conference play against VCU at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 10  in the Siegel Center, Richmond Virginia. George Washington will play their next game against Richmond in the Robins Center, Sunday Feb. 11 at 1 p.m.
