Women’s basketball falls to St. Joseph’s on Wednesday

St. Bonaventure continued its losing streak in conference with a 65-40 loss at home to St. Joseph’s University.

This marks Bonaventure’s seventh loss in a row in conference play. The Bonnies are now 4-14 overall, and 1-6 in conference. St. Bonaventure currently sits second to last in the Atlantic-10 women’s basketball standings.

The Hawks led the entire game. At one point the Hawks led by as much as 27 points in the third quarter. SJU also led the game in rebounding by three. St. Joe’s grabbed 33 rebounds compared to the Bonnies’ 30.  

The Hawks outscored Bonaventure in the second quarter 14-2. Bonnies went 1-8 from the field during the second. The Hawks outscored the Bonnies in three out of the four quarters. The only quarter the Bonnies outscored the Hawks was in the third quarter 17-3. 

Bonnies redshirt junior guard Isabellah Middleton led the team in scoring with 20 points. SBU senior guards Dani Haskell and Tianna Johnson also contributed with eight points each, including a half-court buzzer beater by Haskell going into halftime. Bonnies senior guard Nadechka Laccen led the team in rebounding with five rebounds. SBU senior forward Payton Fields led the team in steals with two.  

Junior forward Mackenzie Smith led the Hawks in scoring with 21 points in the victory. Smith also led the team in steals with four. Smith was 8-13 from the field and was 3-4 from three-point range. SJU sophomore forward Laura Ziegler was the second-leading scorer with 14 points. Ziegler also led the team in rebounding with 11 rebounds.  

St. Bonaventure racked up 23 turnovers in comparison to the nine turnovers committed by St. Joseph’s. St. Joe’s had 14 steals in the victory in comparison to Bonaventure’s four.  

Only 13 free-throw attempts were made all game. Bonaventure only took two of these free throws, going 2-for-2 from the line.  

SBU sophomore guard Tamar voor de Poort had a career-high eight minutes and two points in the loss.  

The Bonnies had a brief 9-0 run in the third quarter led by Johnson’s six-point contribution. 

SJU outscored Bonaventure 19-6 off of turnovers. The Hawks also outscored the Bonnies 32-16 in the paint.  

The Hawks continue conference play at home against Davidson on Saturday, Jan. 27 at 2 p.m. The Bonnies also continue conference play on national television against Dayton on Sunday, Jan. 28 at noon. The game can be seen on CBS Sports Network.
