The Akron Zips mounted a major comeback last Sunday as they came back to defeat the St. Bonaventure Bonnies, 63-54.
It was a game of runs to say the least. The Bonnies started the game on an 11-0 run and led 16-4 early. The Zips then took their own run then, going on a 18-5 run to take a 22-21 lead. That would be the only lead the Zips would have in the first half, as the Bonnies dominant shooting gave them a nine point advantage at the break, 39-30.
In the first half, the Bonnies knocked down seven three pointers, equaling their total in their first two games combined.
The Bonnies had a seven point advantage heading into the fourth quarter, 50-43, but it would go downhill from there. After an Olivia Tucker three to make it 54-46 with 6:04 remaining, Akron called a timeout and the Bonnies’ offense went cold. As a matter of fact, this would be the last field goal they made in the game.
The Bonnies offense went ice cold. Somehow, with 44 seconds remaining, they still maintained a 54-53 lead.
The Bonnies turned the ball over in four of their five possessions leading up to that point. The one other possession was a blocked shot.
With 43 seconds left, Akron took just its second lead of the game, 55-54. The Zips wouldn’t give this one up. Akron finished the game on a 17-0 run and got its first win of the season.
The difference in the Akron comeback was getting to the free-throw line 17 times in the final 10 minutes; they converted 12 of 17.
Conversely, the Bonnies went 1-for-13 from the field in the final period. Their lone field goal was an Olivia Tucker three. The team turned the ball over seven times. They were outscored in the quarter 20-4. The Bonnies turned the ball over 20 times in the game.

“We did some really good things for a lot of the game, but we just folded like a tent in the fourth quarter,” head coach Jesse Flemming said. “We have to learn how to win, and I have to teach them how to win.”

Flemming was impressed with freshman Olivia Tucker’s play, saying, “I’m really happy OT came in, she made some really nice shots.”

Tucker provided an offensive threat off the bench for the Bonnies as she finished with 11 points in just 16 minutes; she went 3-for-4 from three. Deja Francis led the Bonnies with 13 points.

On Wednesday night, the Bucknell Bison defeated the Bonnies 68-60. It was another comeback for the opposition, as the Bison outscored the Bonnies 21-10 in the third quarter.

Oliva Tucker had arguably the best game of her four game career. Tucker had 20 points on 7-for-15 shooting; she knocked down six threes.

Bucknell shot 47.1% from the field and knocked down eight three pointers in the win.

The Bonnies now sit at 1-3 and will play in Buffalo Sunday evening against Canisius College. Last season, the Bonnies beat Canisius in three overtimes, 100-94.
