Women’s soccer shuts out Youngstown State

The St. Bonaventure women’s soccer team was powered by five different goal scorers in their 6-0 victory over Youngstown State University Friday night. The win was the Bonnies second straight, and their first shut out of the season.

The scoring got underway much earlier in the game, with a header in the 2nd  minute from sophomore midfielder Marley Jarvis and another header in the 4th  minute from freshman forward Sydney Cerza. Senior defender Jennifer Morris assisted both goals. Freshman midfielder Bella May scored against the Youngstown State keeper twice in the second half.

The Bonnies continued to put on the pressure, getting behind the Youngstown State defense multiple times in the first ten minutes of the game. The third goal nearly came in the 15th minute off a powerful shot from junior forward Danielle Vis, but it hit the post. But Vis got redemption three minutes later, when, off a throw-in, she showcased her foot skills and put the ball in the back of the net for a 3-0 Bonnies lead.

The Bonnies added their fourth goal in the 32nd minute after sophomore midfielder Gretta sent in a wonderful pass for sophomore forward Jessica Scruggs, who finished her chance.

Coach Steve Brdarski said the biggest thing the team will take away from this win is that this is how the team needs to play in every game, and that their first shut out will give them confidence.

“Youngstown State was attacking the whole game, and we denied them the opportunity to score a goal, to which I give credit to the girls,” said Brdarski. “This is how you have to play at home, you have to defend this turf, we can’t let teams have their way and have their opportunities. Also, the fact that we’re scoring goals, it’s giving us confidence. I hope it doesn’t give us ego, I hope it gives us confidence, and that we can build on that.”

Morris talked about confidence, saying it was part of what led to the offensive outburst.

“We’ve been working hard and putting the effort in. Last game we put in four goals, now we want to just keep that momentum going,” said Morris. “We came out hard, we wanted the ball, and we went for it.”

The next game on the schedule for the Bonnies is at Cleveland State on Sunday, Sept.11. Morris said she expects the same result in that game as tonight’s game.

“We’re going to take it to them,” said Morris. “We’re going to go there, win it, and walk out.”
