Smell the world’s coffee, Bona’s

If you’re an underclassman, and you heard Jon Stewart is leaving “The Daily Show” to replace Brian Williams who had to leave for six months after coming down with the measles, it might be time to pay closer attention to what’s happening outside of the Bona Bubble.
During my three years here, I’ve noticed that students are becoming more and more distanced from global current events. Life at Bonaventure is spontaneous, so I get how the distancing happens. However that doesn’t diminish the importance of staying tuned in to the world.
King Abdullah is not an Academy Award nominee in a Wes Anderson film and although it’s unclear if Bruce Jenner is becoming a woman, he doesn’t have anything to do with gay marriage in Alabama.
The world is a connected place, and now it’s easier than ever to become and stay connected with everything happening. Facebook has a list of trending topics across the globe when you log in. It takes two minutes to read the list to see if anything piques your interest. It’s worth it.
Many news outlets gear their sites toward the college-age demographic, which makes it easier to stay in touch, but more importantly, makes you want to stay in touch after a while.
You don’t have to be a pundit, but it’s our responsibility as world citizens to follow what happens in other countries. The global economy needs a little bit of everyone’s attention in order to last. Paying attention could be the difference between seeing the signs and repeating someone’s mistake.
I think this is true especially for seniors and everyone getting ready to graduate into the professional world. We will be joining the workforce with people for whom reading about world news is a hobby. An informed perspective will help any young professional come off as more intelligent and leave a lasting impression in anyone’s mind.
It looks bad when you say something publically and you make an error in fact. One article a day could help you avoid a humiliating experience — an easy feat for seniors and freshmen alike to achieve.
The Seahawks did pass from the 1-yard line with Marshawn in the backfield and get picked. That one you did hear right.
