Computer lab rumors crushed

Michael Hoffman, Associate Provost and Chief Information Officer, put rumors of eliminating computer labs to rest when he said, “Nothing is different.”

Over the summer with the Robinson and Falconio Hall renovations, many offices lost space in order to accommodate new freshmen rooms. Some of these offices moved to the basement of the Reilly Center. With the addition of offices, the Reilly Center computer lab, RC 5, was closed. According to software that tracks computer lab usage, this lab was the least used by far and therefore easily removed, said Hoffman.

The nine other general-use computer labs located in the Friedsam Library, Plassmann, Murphy, Walsh and Robinson will remain open. Hoffman said the university supports computer labs as well as students bringing their own devices.

Hoffman said, “The only thing we are doing as an institution is we are trying to do what we can to support bring your own device (BYOD).”

The Swan building has many power sources available for students to plug in their electronic devices. This summer, Plassmann received power and a wireless network on the first floor to help students who bring laptops into the classrooms as well.

As of now, there are no plans to eliminate any other computer labs on campus even with 99 percent of students bringing their own computer onto campus, according to Hoffman.  He said he sees no scenario where every computer lab would be shut down.
