Leave room for food

Thanksgiving is right around the corner, and I am anxiously awaiting the opportunity to eat a boatload of home-cooked food with my family. But what is one to wear for a meal in which he or she is inevitably going to end up with a massive food baby? Have no fear, for I have tips on how to create a chic and roomy outfit.

Girls, if you have the sort of family where you have to dress up for every family occasion, I recommend going with a dress. A loose, boxy dress, like a shift dress or shirt dress, has no waist band and will glide right over your stomach so that you don’t feel restricted while eating. You could go with a skirt, but the waistband might be uncomfortable and cause you to fidget during the meal. If you are going with a pair of dress pants, try a pair of wide-leg trousers for the ultimate comfort, and avoid wearing a pair that requires a belt. Wear a pair of flats or low-heeled ankle boots to finish off the look.

If your family allows you to wear whatever you want, the comfiest option is a pair of leggings. Make sure they are as opaque as possible so they are appropriate to wear around your grandma. Choose a pair that isn’t constricting around the waist. Pair these with an oversized sweater to keep it loose on top and to provide balance to the outfit. A pair of Converse or black low-heeled boots will work for shoes.

For guys, if your family likes you to dress up for the holidays, choose a pair of boot-cut khakis that look refined yet are still comfortable. Preferably choose pants that don’t need a belt. A looser button-down or sweater will keep your stomach free. A pair of suede dress shoes or desert boots keeps your feet warm and looks smart.

For a more casual look, a pair of relaxed jeans with a T-shirt or sweatshirt will keep you comfortable as you gorge on cranberry sauce. A pair of canvas sneakers will add to the laid back vibe of the outfit.

Use these tips to create an outfit that won’t get in the way of quality eating time with your family. You’re going to want to consume as much yummy food as you can while you are home.
