A St. Bonaventure University student was charged after making a threat on Monday.

The Office of Safety and Security contacted New York State Police after students on a floor of Robinson Hall reported a disturbing email, state police said.

An unnamed 18-year-old male student allegedly copied and pasted what police are calling a “threat to harm” from the popular website reddit.com.

The email was sent in German, according to Troop A Public Information Officer James O’Callaghan.

According to a campus notice board, law enforcement spoke to the student who sent the email. The student characterized the email as a hoax.

The student was charged with aggravated harassment and issued an appearance ticket to Allegany Town Court, according to state police.

Police searched the student’s room and belongings and did not find any firearms. The student was also suspended from St. Bonaventure University, O’Callaghan said.

“This is a reminder to the campus community that making threats of any kind, even if the intention isn’t serious, will absolutely be taken seriously and are subject to external and internal judicial discipline,” the release said.

The Bona Venture will update this story with more information as it becomes available.
