ST. BONAVENTURE, N.Y. — The St. Bonaventure University men’s golf team will look to rebound from a ninth-place finish at the Temple Invitational when it competes in the Matthews Auto Intercollegiate today in Binghamton, New York.

The Bonnies finished ninth out of 12 teams at the Temple Invitational on Sept. 21-22. The team will now turn their attention to upcoming tournaments with the goal of adding another win.

“As a team, our main goal is to win another tournament,” said junior Dante Bertoni.

Freshman Mitchell Sargent, this week’s GoBonnies.com co-Student Athlete of the Week, emphasized the same goal.

“We are looking to win the next tournament,” said Sargent. “That’s always the goal at the beginning of the week, and any success we have can and will be used to build momentum.”

The Bonnies found success earlier this season, winning the Little Three Championship on Sept. 8. The annual tournament features Bonaventure, Canisius University and Niagara University.

Bertoni said the victory gave the Bonnies confidence moving forward.

“The momentum from the Little Three seems to be just what we need,” Bertoni said. “It’s always good to see the results and we saw them in the Little Three.”

As the Bonnies continue through their schedule, Bertoni and Sargent say that team chemistry is their strongest asset and will help the group move forward from Temple. The team has built chemistry through respect they have for one another.

Sargent mentioned team chemistry remains the group’s biggest strength.

“We are great at not letting the minor disagreements get in the way of a big picture, and we hold a certain respect for each other,” Sargent said. “Most of that respect was given, even for me as a freshman.” Bertoni said that this chemistry was built through everyday parts of being teammates.”

The Bonnies turn their attention to the Matthews Auto Intercollegiate, an event Bertoni noted carries additional significance.

“I feel like our team plays well there, and the tournament is in my hometown,” Bertoni said. “We’re excited and hopeful we make a run at the title.”

The event continues today with its second day of competition.
