The St. Bonaventure University men’s basketball team continued its skid, losing its fourth consecutive game in a 68-64 defeat to Saint Joseph’s University Wednesday.
Sophomore guard Jaiden Glover-Toscano led the way for the Hawks (11-7, 3-2 A-10) with 23 points. Redshirt sophomore guard Dasear Haskins added 16 points and 11 rebounds and senior guard Derek Simpson tallied 11 points, seven assists and five rebounds.
Leading the way for the Bonnies (11-6, 0-4 A-10) was senior forward Frank Mitchell, with 22 points and eight rebounds. Senior guard Cayden Charles poured in 17 points and grabbed six rebounds and junior guard Darryl SImmons II added 14 points. The trio combined for 53 of Bonaventure’s 64 points.
The Hawks came out of the gates hot, scoring the first six points of the game and leading by as many as 11 in the first half before carrying a 35-28 lead into the halftime break. Glover-Toscano paced the Hawks with 10 points in the first half, and Haskins added nine points and five rebounds.
Mitchell was the lone catalyst of the Bonnies offense in the opening half, scoring 20 of the 28 Bonaventure points. Mitchell shot 9-of-16 in the first half, while the rest of the Bonnies went 2-of-17 from the floor.
After trailing by 10 points early in the second half, the Bonaventure offense clicked, storming back to take its first lead of the night 43-42 thanks to back-to-back makes from beyond the arc by Charles.
Charles and Simmons took over for the Bonnies in the second half. Charles scored all 17 of his points after halftime and Simmons scored 11 of his 14 points in the second half.
Down by one in the final minute, Glover-Toscano gave the Hawks a 66-64 lead with an and-one layup. Bonnies senior forward Daniel Egbuniwe missed a potential go-ahead three in the final seconds, and the Hawks sealed the game at the free throw line.
The Bonnies will remain in Philadelphia for their next contest, a matchup with La Salle University Saturday at John E. Glaser Arena. The game is scheduled to tip off at 2:30 p.m. and will be broadcast live on USA Network and the Bonnies Online Network.
