The St. Bonaventure women’s soccer team fell Thursday to the St. Joseph’s Hawks by a score of 3-1.
The Hawks (5-9-1, 2-5-0 A-10) started the game fast, with a scoring chance in the 8th minute that was denied by sophomore goalkeeper Adelaide Paredes. In the 12th minute, Bonnies graduate midfielder Daniela De Souza opened the scoring with her third goal of the season on a freekick over a wall of defenders giving St. Bonaventure a 1-0 lead early.
Two minutes later, St. Joseph’s freshman forward Chelea Leal took a shot that deflected into the goal by a Bonnies defender to tie the game.
Just moments before halftime, the Hawks took a 2-1 lead off a goal by senior forward Natalie Vicari, assisted by senior defender Olivia Mancini.
Bonnies sophomore goalkeeper Adalaide Paredes kept the deficit at one when she made a sliding save in the 57th minute.
Three minutes later, St. Joseph’s junior forward Kerri Jackson had a one-on-one with Paredes and missed off the goalpost. Away from the play, a Bonnies forward was taken down by the hair. A red card was issued to Hawks junior midfielder Juliette Muro, removing her from the game.
The Bonnies (3-9-2 0-7-0 A-10) looked to tie the game in the 66th minute when graduate defender Paula Sabrina Diaz attempted a corner kick that was deflected off the post.
With nine minutes left, Hawks sophomore forward Sarah Fisher scored her second of the season off a pass from Chelsea Leal to take a 3-1 lead, which they would hold for the remainder of the contest.
The Bonnies were outshot 7-3 but managed to commit three less fouls than the Hawks, who also notched a yellow and a red card.
St. Bonaventure looks to pick up its first conference win of the season when they travel to Dayton University to take on the Flyers. The match takes place on Oct. 19, with kickoff set for 1 p.m. The match will air live on ESPN+.
