Many St. Bonaventure University students said they believe the most popular foods for the Super Bowl are wings, dips and pizza. In Western New York, the proximity to Buffalo means that chicken wings tend to be more commonly associated with football. However, students say that several gameday food options contribute to having the ideal set up. Below are a few of their favorites:

Choice number one: Cheeses and Meats

A popular option for many is a charcuterie board. It contains a variety of cheeses, meats and crackers.

“I think the best food spread for the Super Bowl is a nice meat and cheese spread because I really enjoy charcuterie boards,” Carter Black, sophomore double major in Spanish and adolescent education, said.

Junior Dominic Argenio agreed with this sentiment.

“I would like a nice charcuterie board with a lot of different cheeses,” Argenio said.

However, this is not the case for everyone. Many people enjoy keeping the spread simple.

“My ideal setup is just finger food and appetizers. I am a very ‘loves a little bit of everything’ kind of person.” Bhavika Sethi, a senior, said. “I think the most meal type food I would like are small little sandwiches.”

Choice number two: Best Wing Flavor

Wings are an increasingly popular football food, regardless of the sauces that are on them. There is a surrounding debate on which sauces are best to use. There are several different ways to approach a wing whether it’s spicy, mild, savory or a type of rub.

“My favorite wing flavor is honey garlic, which is super popular in Ontario,” Abigael Hiltz, a junior from Peterborough Ontario, said.

Some offer differing opinions.

“Garlic parmesan is my favorite. I think they just taste so good and aren’t too spicy or dry,” Junior Allison Zhang said. “To me, they’re ‘everybody wings’ because most people can enjoy them.”

Being from Buffalo, Argenio has a wide variety of knowledge on wings.

“Being from Buffalo I believe I have had some of the best chicken wings in the country,” Argenio said. “My favorite type of sauce on a chicken wing is hot sauce.”

The debate that has no end is what is the best wing flavor.

What’s better on a wing Ranch or Blue Cheese?

Zhang made the claim of neither.

“I don’t particularly appreciate dipping my wings in blue cheese or ranch,” Zhang said. “I think dipping your wings in either ruins the balance of the sauce the wing originally came in.”

For Sethi, and many others, this question is dependent on the type of wing,

“If it is not a spicy flavor, blue cheese is definitely my number one choice,” Sethi said.
However, ranch is really good with barbecue or garlic parm wings.”

People’s plan to watch.

When it comes to watching the game on Sunday, many students already have their plans when it comes to watching the game.

“My plans for the Super Bowl are to watch it in the lounge of my floor with my roommates,” Black said. “My RA is supplying free food and drinks.”

Many students will gather this Sunday to watch the game together.

“I’ll be watching the game with some friends, enjoying some good food and buying some chicken wings from Randy’s up the River,” Argenio said.

Regardless of how the game turns out, it seems the Bonaventure students have their meals planned out for the game.
