Daniel Schiffhauer is one of the first students on track to earn a Bachelor of Science in economics at St. Bonaventure University.

The economics program, through the School of Business, offers a Bachelor of Business Administration, a Bachelor of Science degree and/or a minor in economics. Schiffhauer will graduate with a Bachelor of Science in economics and Bachelor of Business Administration in finance.

Schiffhauer, of East Aurora, New York has always had an interest in the study of economics. He said he likes the idea of having a logical and reasonable explanation while explaining how the real-world operates.

The major in economics was offered 20 to 30 years ago, before budget cuts, and the university received full accreditation at the beginning of last year to add it again. Dr. Benjamin Posmanick, his advisor and assistant professor of finance at the School of Business, also played a huge role in the degree approval.

“The BBA and BS degree programs are designed to help students examine the production and consumption of goods, and analyze real-world issues such as international trade, poverty, taxes, crime, and education,” stated Bonaventure’s website.

The current junior is the chairperson of the Economics Club, which helped him push for the possible degree and raise awareness among club members. The club is more student-led discussion based with social events, presentation creation, and Schiffhauer will eventually run his idea for his honor’s thesis by the 12 active members this year.

“The really neat thing that I like to tell people is that if you’re already a finance major, getting a double major or minor in economics is very very streamlined,” said Schiffhauer about double majoring in both finance and economics.

He chose to take Intermediate Macroeconomics and Intermediate Microeconomics as his electives. He only had to take an additional three classes to complete the major.

Schiffhauer keeps himself busy by also belonging to Bonaventure’s Mock Trial Team, Students in Money Management (SIMM), the Student Government Association (SGA) and the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps’ Gold Bar.

After his undergraduate degree, he plans to stay an extra year at Bonaventure to receive his postgraduate degree, the Master of Business Administration. In his last year of undergraduate, he can take up to three graduate classes and then hopes to complete his MBA in one year. Schiffhauer aims high for his future plans and is looking at the Army’s financial branch.

“We do have one of the best schools of business in the country, so I was very happy we ended up getting the economics degree here,” he said. St. Bonaventure University is ranked No. 132 out of 328 in Best Online MBA Programs, and is accredited by the Association for the Advancement of Collegiate Schools of Business. The MBA program is also eligible to students from all undergraduate majors.
