“BoJack Horseman” has finally ended. “Bojack Horseman,” an American adult-animated web-television series created by Raphael Bob-Waksberg, aired on Netflix on Aug. 22, 2014. The show follows a plot about a washed-up 90’s sitcom actor named Bojack Horseman, voiced by Will Arnett. He plans to return to the spotlight by releasing an autobiography which is to be written by ghostwriter Diane Nguyen, voiced by Alison Brie. As he picks the pieces of his life back up and puts them back together, he is accompanied by his agent Princess Carolyn voiced by Amy Sedaris, his roommate Todd Chaves voiced by Aaron Paul, and his former rival Mr. Peanutbutter voiced by Paul F. Tompkins.
The series has received many awards since its debut, including four Critics’ Choice Television Awards for Best Animated Series, three Annie Awards and two Writers Guild of America Awards. “Bojack Horseman” has also been nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards, including one for Outstanding Animated Program.
Despite mixed reviews after its debut, the series has come into its own as one of Netflix’s best-known cartoons. The show ran for a total of six seasons which comprised 77 episodes and a Christmas special.
Season five left off with Bojack facing the consequences for choking his costar, Gina voiced by Stephanie Beatriz, while under the influence of multiple substances. Diane helps Bojack begin rehab after he vows to change his habit of alcohol and drug abuse. The audience is given hope that Bojack will improve his toxic ways, and he does.
Season six was announced on Oct. 30, 2018. It was later announced, on Sept. 27, that the sixth season would be split into two parts. The first half premiered on Oct.25 and the second half was released on Jan. 31, 2020. The season had 16 episodes in total.
In the first episode of season six, “A Horse Walks into a Rehab,” Bojack Horseman is seen inside of Pastiches, the rehab facility Diane dropped him off at during the end of season five.
The episode begins with Bojack dreaming of the death of Sarah Lynn, voiced by Kristen Schaal, before waking up in rehab. This gives the audience insight as to the recurring theme of Sarah Lynn’s death throughout the season. Bojack is forced to deal with journalists who plan to sabotage his recovery, and he is faced with a new dilemma in his friendship with his half-sister HollyHock.
In the second-to-last episode of the season, “The View From Halfway Down,” Bojack finds himself forced to confront the consequences of his bad habits and decide whether or not to put his life back together. Bojack confides in Todd about his fear of relapsing, and Todd reassures him. When Bojack asks, “What if I relapse again,” Todd replies, “Then you’ll get sober again.”
Those words ring true as inspiration for anyone watching struggling with addiction. It just shows how great of a show it truly was.
