Election sidebar: Mass email issue resolved

in NEWS by

A mass email sent out to students last week by presidential candidates J.W. Cook and Jessica Laursen caused an issue with tech services.

According to Tom Missel, director of marketing and media relations, said “… (Tech services) made (Cook and Laursen) aware that mass emailing was a violation of our Computer Use Policy.”

Contrary to some rumors that the pair is under investigation for the mass email, Missel said, “There was no investigation. It was just a misunderstanding and the matter is closed.”

“We didn’t know that this was not okay,” Cook said. “We looked up names in the directory and we sent out an email through an email (service).” He said they got the idea to send the emails through an outside service from his mother’s job, which sends emails to clients through the same service.

“We didn’t hack anything, we didn’t go through and break anything to get to these emails,” he said.

“Everyone has access to the directory,” Laursen said. She noted that as soon as she discovered the mass email was against tech services policy — thanks to her email account being locked — she “ran over to tech services” to apologize.

The pair noted that tech services said the email was considered spam or chain mail, as it was such a large email.

“We were completely unaware it was against policy,” Cook said.
