A truck traveling on Francis Road left the roadway between Friday night and early Saturday morning striking a utility pole and a tree on campus.

The driver, Mr. Phillip Gardner, 23, of Allegany, was traveling northbound in a 2002 Dodge pickup truck. Unsafe tires and an unsafe speed caused him to lose control of the truck, New York State Police said.

Gardner, who is not a student at St. Bonaventure University, was transported by Allegany ambulance to the Olean General Hospital for undisclosed injuries, police said.

According to Phil Winger, associate vice president for facilities, the damaged light pole is likely not repairable and will be replaced by a spare pole.

“We will likely wait until closer to spring to make the replacement,” Winger said. “Frozen ground would make it difficult to make the change now.”

Gardner’s truck was towed from the scene by Amores service.
