As the assistant news editor at The Bona Venture, I have several tasks each week. Like the other editors, I write weekly and edit the stories in the news section. Although I am not responsible for thinking of topics for story assignments, I sometimes inform our news editor (Lian) about possible story ideas for the upcoming week.

I often look at the campus Notice Board and any other notices that are sent to all St. Bonaventure students. Mostly, I edit stories (I am the first editor to look at most stories in the news section) and the stock box (written by SIMM President Steven Zimmer) as they arrive in my inbox, typically on Tuesday or Wednesday.

Our editing night for the BV is Wednesday evening, and to be completely honest, I believe it is called “hump day” for a reason (although I love throwing that reference in any chance I get).

I have a love/hate relationship with Wednesdays, mostly because it is sandwiched between my two 8:30 AM class sessions. Besides this nuisance, I genuinely enjoy editing nights spent in the BV newsroom. You would think staying up until 2 AM each Wednesday night would be either tiring or boring, yet it is neither. The BV staff is to thank for this, as well as simply the joy of writing. Helping other (mostly) journalism students with editing and seeing their story in our newspaper is one of the most rewarding aspects of being on the BV staff.

I still call my Mom whenever a story I write or a picture I take is on the front page. But what I am able to take away from my BV experience this semester is not really in the actual production of the paper. Although I can never wait until Friday morning to see the culmination of the week’s work in the BV, I think my favorite part of being on the BV staff is the camaraderie. We are truly are (as cliché as it sounds) a family. I hope all of the other writers have that same experience.
