SBU to host Thomas Merton’s 100th Birthday

Thomas Merton’s 100th Birthday Party and SBU Winter Carnival will take place from noon to midnight on Saturday, Jan. 31.

The first segment of the celebration runs from noon to 5:00 p.m., and will include an ice skating rink in front of Plassman, sponsored by Campus Activities Board (CAB), as well as horse-drawn wagon rides and a selfie contest.

A winter games competition will also take place and feature games such as “Dress the Friar,” snowperson building and KanJam.

A basketball tailgate party will start at 4:00 p.m. on the Reilly Quad, beginning with free chili dogs to the first 250 students who attend and show their SBU IDs. Face painting and a Bona’s Spirit Dance-a-Thon will follow. The tailgate will conclude at 6:30 p.m., before the men’s basketball game vs. LaSalle at 7 p.m.

From 9 p.m. to midnight, students can attend a comedy show by the Laugh Pack, a slam-poetry performance by Chattertons Slam Poetry Club and a jazz segment by the SBU New Boppers at the Hickey Dining Hall. The winners of the winter games competition will also be announced.

Students can participate in a “100 Lantern Lift-Off” and conclude Thomas Merton’s 100th Birthday Party and SBU Winter Carnival at the Midnight Mass of Celebration in the University Chapel in Doyle Hall.
