In the near future, students will have to swipe their student ID cards to access the library after 9 p.m. This will only be to enter the library, not to exit.

“The card reader controls on the entry into the library enhances security and access measures by restricting access during certain times of the day and evening hours,” Vito Czyz, director of Safety and Security said. “Only those with an active Bona ID are authorized entry.”

With the card reader system, Safety and Security can track who enters the library, according to Czyz. Robison and Falconio Hall dorms have the card reader system in them as well; the library system will work in the same way.

“This will go into effect as soon as we correct a minor technical issue we are having with the door,” Czyz said.

Paul Spaeth, director of the Friedsam Memorial Library, said the new system will ensure the safety of Bonaventure students who are in the library late at night.

“The primary function is to enhance security in the later hours of the evening,” Spaeth said. “With limited staffing at night, along with the regular hours until 1 a.m. most of the week, the card reader will help to insure that only Bonaventure community members will be able to enter.”

Raevin Melendrez-Wood, a sophomore theology and philosophy major and library employee, said the new swipe system makes her feel more secure because she works late nights.

“I like how the swipe system only allows the students to come in at night so no sketchy characters can use the facility,” Melendrez-Wood said. “Also, (I like) how the doors automatically lock, so they probably won’t swing open when it’s windy and really cold. Since I work there late nights and I’m in the front alone, it makes me feel a lot safer knowing only my classmates can get in.”

Safety and Security urged students to pay attention to the Notice Board to see when this will go into effect.
