While at school, it can be difficult to concentrate on one thing because there is always an abundance of homework to be done, so knit yourself a solution. Tie work in with everything else that happens around campus and the school year can seem quite daunting. Knitting is perfect when it comes to patience and concentration.

One of the many new clubs available to students on campus is called Knitty by Nature. The group, which is open to knitters of all levels, is a way for students to relax and learn a new skill. After a day full of work and anxiety from classes, knitting is a tranquil way to end the night.

Sam Harrienger, a sophomore education major, explained everyone is welcome to participate.

“(The organizers) help you,” Harrienger said. “It is for beginners and advanced (knitters).”

She added that while the club does not currently have a budget and members must bring their own supplies, knitting is an inexpensive hobby.

“For the first year we are not given a budget,” she explained. “So we have to supply our own needles and yarn, but that costs under $10.”

Harrienger says she has high hopes for the club and knitting has been a long-time hobby of hers.

“I am super excited for the club,” Harrienger said.  “I have been knitting since I was young and am excited to see other young adults interested in the activity.”

Knitting is a creative outlet as well. The feeling of being able to create something from nothing is rewarding.

The winters are typically harsh around St. Bonaventure, and scarves are seen all over campus. Members of the club can knit sweaters, purses, shirts, scarves, hats, gloves, mittens, or socks. The list goes on and on.

Although the interest meeting was held last Thursday, anyone interested in knitting can go to the next meeting tonight at 6 p.m. in the Merton Center. Interested students can also email the president of the club, Gerard Stankewicz.

Setu Shah, a sophomore biology major, gave her take on why she joined the club.

“I joined because I like learning new things and love making things with my hands,” Shah said. “And I thought it would be fun to knit a scarf or hat during my eight hour bus ride back to Jersey.”
