Red Hot Mars

They may not have a team close to St. Bonaventure to cheer on, but students all around campus are getting prepared for the biggest football Sunday of the year:  Super Bowl Sunday.

This year, the Seattle Seahawks and the Denver Broncos will compete for the biggest win of the year. Bruno Mars, accompanied by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, will perform during the halftime show.

Dorm rooms will be filled with store-bought chicken wing dip, televisions at high-volume and a few Buffalo Bills T-shirts wasting away in the closets of Bonnies will make their return.

Of course, there is a lot of talk about the football game. However, students are also buzzing about the commercials and the halftime show just a few days away from the event.

Sophomore sociology major Taylor Cole said she is most looking forward to the football game. Nonetheless, her curiosity about the halftime performance is growing.

“I always look forward to the halftime show. My favorite performer was Bruce Springsteen in 2009,” Cole said. “It’s so important that everyone watching can come together and sing along. Hopefully the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Bruno Mars collaboration can do something similar.”

Senior art history major Maggie Young agreed with Cole.

“The halftime show should be someone good like Beyoncé last year,” Young said. “It’s important people of all age groups can enjoy the performer.”

Senior journalism and mass communication major Zach Warren is also curious about the halftime show.

“I’m not a big fan of Bruno Mars, but I do like the Red Hot Chili Peppers,” Warren said. “I’m excited to see that combination.”

In addition to the halftime show, commercials remain a staple in Super Bowl entertainment.

“I’ve been told that Mike Tyson is doing a Super Bowl commercial that is going to be extremely funny,” Warren added.

Sophomore strategic communication and digital media major Jillian Hammell had a few commercial predictions of her own.

“I think the commercials are going to be solid this year,” Hammell said. “There’s so much material in the media to pull from. For example, Grumpy Cat. His sour expression would be great in a commercial, maybe even a five-second appearance.  I also think that the commercials are going to pull at some emotional chords, like last year with the Budweiser horse commercial.”

Students don’t have to enjoy the Super Bowl from their dorm rooms. The Campus Activities Board is hosting an event in The Rathskeller at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, giving students the opportunity to watch the game together while enjoying free chips and dip.

So no matter what you’re watching for, the football game, the halftime show or the commercials, join in on the enthusiasm and celebrate the Super Bowl.
