Students from every team, organization and major are stacking up their books, packing their backpacks and making their way over to the library.

After this Friday, it may seem like the big push is complete, but many students have further challenges ahead once they return from break.

“The main thing I’m working towards once I get back to school is getting on the dean’s list,” Jasmine Foster, a sophomore journalism and mass communication major, said. “With hard work over these next few months, I know I can get there.”

Sophomore finance major Cody Didas said he also wants to obtain his goal GPA once he returns from midterm break.

“Of course, I want to achieve an admirable GPA for the year,” Didas said. “To get this, I hope to learn better time-management skills. That’ll be the key to earning the GPA I want.”

Didas said he has another goal as well, one that doesn’t pertain to school.

“Another one of my goals is to make sure I call home more often,” he said. “I know it doesn’t sound like much, but it’s something I’d like to consider as the year goes on.”

Like Didas, other students at St. Bonaventure have many goals once they return from break aside from academics.

“My main goal is to come up with good choreography,” said Charnice Martin, a sophomore sports studies major. “I will be teaching dance at a local dance studio this year, so I want to take this break to brainstorm some ideas that the dancers will appreciate.”

Amber Williams,  a sophomore English major, set a few goals for herself after the break as well.

“I want to focus on creating a portfolio of my writing after midterm break,” Williams said. “Now is the time to get my work prepared, so I can apply for internships over the summer.”

While some students focus on the future, others, like sophomore journalism and mass communication major Ryan McDonough, focus on how to balance what they are doing now.

“I’d like to use this break as a gauge to see if I am able to handle both my extracurricular and curricular schedule,” McDonough said. “If I do well academically, maybe I can take on more responsibility in extracurricular activities. If not, I need to make some decisions about my day-to-day schedule in order to focus on my grades more.”

Whether students aspire to earn higher grades, join more clubs or take on leadership positions, this break will serve as a thinking period before the semester picks up pace again. So be sure to eat a big slice of pumpkin pie, watch your favorite movies and spend some time enjoying the break. The next rush of motivation and hard work is on its way when we return.
