It’s hard to imagine what this university would be like today without the impact of several illustrious individuals who have ventured onto campus to begin their good journeys over the last 150 years. From Thomas Merton to Andrew Nicholson, we students spend time learning about the achievements of our predecessors, about how we all should aspire to emulate their best qualities.
And while history’s rose-colored glasses will determine who the next generation of Bonaventure heroes will be, I can’t help but feel a responsibility to make this newspaper the best it can be in the time I’ve been given.
As editor-in-chief, I take immense pride in seeing the BV’s newest faces grow as writers and communicators. This humble newsroom on Robinson Hall’s first floor is in many ways as much a classroom as any room in Murphy. No words can describe the joy that comes from watching a freshman who’s never written a news story see his or her name in print and know it was a job well done.
I also intend to put the BV on the cutting edge in web design and print layout. I want schools like SUNY Fredonia and Ithaca College to look to our publication for inspiration.
I want this semester to be as much of a journey for our readers as it is for our writers and editors. I hope to continue The Bona Venture’s proud tradition of astute, sincere storytelling. I hope to display the writing talents and integrity of St. Bonaventure’s student journalists and help them reach their full potential to the best of my ability. I hope to show the rest of the world that this school is a special place — one that turns its students into ethical, effective communicators who can make a real change.
But most of all, I hope you’re willing to take this journey with us. Are you ready?
Sincerely,
Samantha Berkhead
