The Father Joe Doino Honors and Awards Ceremony – which will take place April 16 at 4 p.m. in the Regina A. Quick Center for the Arts – is looking for nominees that engage in school and community activities. The event includes awards for students, employees and campus organizations that have played a significant role in the community.

A Franciscan priest, director of Franciscan novices and teacher starting in 1986, Father Joe took commitment to serve the community. He held a vital part as an advisor to the Student Government and a member of the Student Government Awards Committee, on top of being an exceptional teacher, scholar, musician, preacher and priest.

With his commitment to the community, the Honor and Awards Ceremony honored Father Joe by changing the name to the Father Joe Doino Awards and Honors Ceremony in 1995, according to Robert DeFazio, director of the center for activities, recreation and leadership.

“The event’s turnout continues to be good,” DeFazio said. However, the event’s organizers would like more individuals to take part and nominate those who take part in campus activities.

To nominate an individual or organization that deserves recognition, nomination sheets can be found in The Office of Student Life, The Center for Activities, Recreation, and Leadership Office, Thomas Merton Center and my.sbu.edu. Nomination forms are being accepted by the Office of Student Life until April 8.

“The one nice thing about the Father Joe Doino Awards is that anyone on campus can nominate anybody else,” DeFazio said.

Students can nominate employees and employees can nominate students who have excelled in both academics and social activities, according to DeFazio.

Awards include acknowledgment in volunteer service, organizations commitment to the university, and leadership abilities, amongst other commitments to the community.

The nomination process is easier than past years, as the nomination form has changed from an essay format to a question-and-answer response. DeFazio said the format contains short and specific questions regarding a nominee’s social participation, academic excellence and personal characteristics.

DeFazio encouraged students and employees to nominate an individual that has been active in the campus community while excelling in academics.

“Think about the people that are around you, and take the time to nominate somebody if they have gone above and beyond,” DeFazio said. “Even if you did not nominate anybody, or were not nominated, attend the ceremony, and support those who were nominated and receive awards.”

DeFazio encourages students and employers to honor the ones who have displayed hard work and dedication for the betterment of the university’s social community.

“We encourage many people to take the time and nominate others, and support those that have been doing a lot,” DeFazio said.
