He’s dated celebrities like Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson and Taylor Swift. He’s exposed previous relationships and talked about his love of porn in Playboy and Rolling Stone.

And for the past two years, he has disappeared.

But the singer-songwriter who has stolen and broken the hearts of countless teenage girls is about to come back.

John Mayer will start touring once again this summer after a two-year hiatus. But there’s more to his disappearance than just sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll.

Mayer has dealt with a throat condition called granuloma, which hindered his voice and forced him to cancel all of his shows over the past two years.

After his first vocal operation in October 2011, Mayer packed up, sold his house in Los Angeles and moved to Bozeman, Mont. in March 2012, according to an August article in Mensjournal.com. Mayer now resides on a 15-acre property overlooking the Yellowstone River in his multimillion-dollar house.

Is he trying to avoid the media and the past wounds he opened? Maybe, but the seven-time Grammy winner had a lot more to say in his newest album, “Born and Raised.”

“I’m a good man, with a good heart,” sings Mayer in his new single “Shadow Days,” which was released last May after also being delayed due to his condition.

Unfortunately for Mayer, the album, which has been out for nine months now, hasn’t been able to be promoted through a tour because of his voice treatment.

Just over a month ago, Mayer got back on the stage at a charity concert in his new hometown. At the show, Mayer announced the granuloma from his throat shrank and the healing process had begun.

According to CBS News, that means he’ll be back on the road come this summer too.

His voice couldn’t reach the high notes like these he displayed on his album, but the raspy tone will take a few months to heal from the botox put into his neck, reported a Feb. 11 CBS News article.

For all the tabloids Mayer has been in over the past five or so years, it seems like he’s finally got his head on straight. His new album, although not all produced in Bozeman, brings a new, rustic Neil Young-type sound that all but screams Big Sky country.

Even though Mayer appears to have taken a break from all the Hollywood drama in his life, Mayer is currently dating pop star Katy Perry.

It would appear to some like he’s heading back into the snake pit, but in an interview with CBS News Mayer said, “For the first time in my life I don’t feel like I’m in a celebrity relationship. It feels like something that’s very human.”

The 35-year-old musician may not sell out every show of his upcoming tour this summer, but fans should give him a chance. Yes, he’s dating Katy Perry, and everyone knows she loves making fireworks, but it’s clear Mayer has tried to put the past behind him.

Even if his voice doesn’t return fully to its former self, this break has given Mayer the opportunity to reinvent himself and his music.
