New semester sparks resolutions for students

Watching the clock count down to midnight on Dec. 31, seeing the ball drop in Times Square, and hearing chants of “Happy New Year!”

This chain of events happens every year, and with that chain comes the end to 365 days of eating too much food, procrastinating at work and/or school and overspending, just to name a few. Everyone looks back on the series of unfortunate deeds they have committed and use them as motivation to do better in the coming year.

These common resolutions grow tired and, unfortunately, are not often carried out. But Bona students are ready to change that.

Micaela Farley, a freshman marketing major, decided to add an exciting flare to her goal for 2013. Farley said she plans on utilizing some of the amenities on campus to achieve her goal of staying in shape.

“I always work out in the Richter Center doing the same thing, but this year I would like to try the rock climbing wall,” Farley said. “I plan on doing it with a few friends and making it a regular thing.”

Freshman Jasmine Foster said she plans to take advantage of the new semester by expanding her group of friends on campus.

“I just think there are so many people out there,” said Foster, a journalism and mass communication major. “I want to give everyone a chance and maybe meet some really great people.”

Foster said she is excited to try different clubs to fulfill her resolution.

“I’m really interested in (WSBU-FM) 88.3 The Buzz,” Foster said. “The people are all so different; it looks like it would be really fun to be a part of.”

While Foster is meeting friends, graduate student Abbie Milliman is excited to make her relationships even stronger with her roommates.

“I live with four other girls, so it gets a bit hectic from time to time,” Milliman said. I really want to be more considerate around the house. Doing more chores and listening to what my roommates have to say will be really helpful.”

Social media is a huge part of freshman sports studies major Andrew Roney’s life.  Roney plans on starting a photography blog on Tumblr, his number one pick when it comes to social media sites. Roney describes himself as an active Tumblr user with a dream.

“I have a dream…that my Tumblr blog will have the most followers in the history of Tumblr,” he said.

Roney said he plans to get to that point by blogging as many pictures as he can on his beach blog and gaining as many followers as possible.

Ed Joiner, a freshman journalism and mass communication major, said he plans to expand his network of followers on YouTube.

“I want to make a viral YouTube video about my life in Rochester,” Joiner said. “It would be more like a video blog; a series of videos that I put on YouTube.”

While the continental U.S. watches Joiner,  Mathew Luckoski, a junior biology-infomatics major, wants to be traveling it.

“This year I would love to travel to Boston. I would like to go over the summer with some friends; I hope it all works out!” Luckoski said.

While 2013 begins to pick up, hopefully the students at SBU – and their friends – will succeed in their New Year’s resolutions. With five months left of the semester, SBU students will be pursuing these goals and resolutions – making them even closer to being the best Bonnies they can be.
