Hospitality unites campus community

With homework, sports, part-time jobs and extracurricular activities, it’s hard for students to find time to socialize with their peers. Hospitality Nights give students that chance.

Hospitality Night occurs every Wednesday at 9 p.m. in the residence halls across campus.

The idea comes from Nichole Gonzalez, executive director of Residential Living; Chris Brown, coordinator of Residential Education and Housing; four Residence Directors (RDs); and the ministers in residence, who meet periodically.

“The concept is to make the residence halls seem more like a home and to have a place for everyone to come and socialize every week,” said Residence Assistant (RA) Tim Crino, a junior journalism and mass communication and English major.

Each week, residence halls hold a specific event which the  building RA’s will coordinate.

“Hospitality Night came from the time when people would get together and break bread for the Eucharist,” said Paula Scraba, a minister in residence. “One of the Wednesdays out of the month will be similar to that, but the other three weeks will be more relaxed and laid-back for people to come, take a break from everything and meet people.”

Last week, Robinson, Falconio and Doyle Halls participated in a pretzel and cookie night.  Students came to eat and socialize with other students in the dorms.

“Hospitality nights are supposed to get everyone together, so we can bond as a community,” said RA Meghan Ferrucci, a sophomore fine arts major. “We like to do something simple and fun for everyone to enjoy. It’s just a time to hangout, relax and eat good snacks.”

Besides snack nights, Hospitality Nights include trivia nights and ice cream socials.

“I live in Devereux Hall, and last Wednesday they held a trivia night,” said Joe Yaegle, a sophomore biology major.  “Most of the questions were related to Bonaventure’s campus, but I always enjoy trivia, so I had a good time.”

Yaegle said Hospitality Nights are a nice way to relax and hang out.

“They aren’t mandatory,” Yaegle said. “At trivia night there were around 15 people, but it was nice to take a break and just have a good time.”
