Shonda Rhimes has produced and created many hit TV shows since her start in the industry in 1995. She is best known as the creator and writer of the medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.” Shonda also created, wrote and executive produced the “Grey’s Anatomy” spin-off “Private Practice” and the political thriller series “Scandal.” Rhimes executive produced ABC television series “Off the Map,” “How to Get Away with Murder” and “The Catch and Station 19.”
To say Rhimes has made her mark in the TV industry is an understatement. Over the years, Rhimes has racked up thousands of fans across the country with her captivating and suspenseful TV series on ABC. Now she is taking her work to Netflix with a trailer to the television series set to come out on Christmas Day, “Bridgerton.”
The TV series is adapted from Julia Quinn’s nine-book romance series, which began with “The Duke and I” in 2000. The book series sees the top of London society rocked by an anonymous column produced by Lady Whistledown. “Bridgerton” gives viewers a glance at the extravagant and brightly-hued world of the show’s lords and ladies.
Without a doubt, the show will be filled with tormented romances that are commonly seen in Rhimes’ series. Bridgerton will star Phoebe Dynevor and Regé Jean Page of “For the People and Roots.” Dynevor plays the oldest daughter of a tiny family eager to marry her off and Page is a newly minted duke with no interest in settling down.
The series is overseen by Chris Van Dusen who previously worked on some of Rhimes’s projects. Rhimes joined Netflix in 2017 after 15 years at ABC. Netflix said that it has entered into a multi-year development with Rhimes when she joined in 2017, by which all of her future productions will be Netflix original series. Netflix has already purchased the streaming rights to past seasons of “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal.” The chief content officer of Netflix, Ted Sarandos, described Rhimes as being a “true Netflixer at heart,” since she loves TV and films.
Rhimes’ upcoming projects with Netflix include “Dance Dreams: Hot Chocolate Nutcracker,” a documentary about Debbie Allen set to debut on Nov. 27 and “Inventing Anna,” an adaptation of New York Magazine’s story “How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People,” originally written by Jessica Pressler based on the real-life story of the controversial society fraud, Anna Delvey.
Rhimes also has a long list of accolades to go along with her success in the TV industry. She has won a Golden Globe Award and was nominated for three Emmy Awards with “Grey’s Anatomy.” Shonda has also won awards from the Writers Guild of America, Producers Guild of America and Director’s Guild of America.
