It’s so hard getting dressed for the day when your weather app says it is 3 degrees outside. We all fall into the trap of throwing on a giant sweatshirt, cozy sweatpants and winter boots. Now, there is nothing wrong with wearing cozy sweats, but you can spice them up a bit to look more put together.

Go through your closet and pull out scarfs, bennies, fuzzy socks, jackets and sweaters.

The trick to staying warm is all about layering. So when you get into class, the dining hall, or wherever else, you can take some layers off so you don’t overheat.

If you are looking to spend some hard earned cash you made during holiday break, here are some trends to look out for.

  1. Puffer coats. Puffer coats can be intimidating because you don’t want to look like the Michelin man. Since they are in style at the moment, designers have made them to be flattering. There are many different styles. Some that are more cropped, form fitting or long will keep you especially warm.
  1. Parkas. Parkas change the game when it comes to beating the cold. As a college student in western New York, you are almost always walking to class in very cold temperatures. Here at Bonaventure, we have the infamous wind tunnels between the RC and the Richter and Plassmann and Murphy. Once you have your parka zipped all the way up with the hood up, it really keeps you warm. Parkas usually are long enough to go down to your knees or maybe longer if you prefer that, which is another advantage in trying to stay warm. You should definitely treat yourself to a nice warm parka because let’s face it – the winters don’t seem to be getting warmer, and they never go out of style.
  1. Teddy coats. If you have no picked up a teddy coat, you are completely missing out. The brand I. AM. GIA came out with the teddy coat a couple years ago, changing the game. It is meant to have an oversized fit, but looks good on anyone. Although, the I. AM. GIA jacket is a little pricey, so look on websites such as Amazon and Forever 21. You will be completely cozy when wearing a teddy coat!

Now that you have your main source of warmth, take it to the next level with a scarf and/or beanie. Scarves are a great way to bury your face when the wind is whipping.

Here is a fun fact: by wearing a beanie or hat, you will keep your whole body warmer because it reduces the amount of heat that escapes from your head. With that being said, get yourself some sort of winter hat to reduce the frigid walks to class.

Keep in mind these tips the next time the weather is 3 degrees out, and stay warm!
