Women’s soccer nets first conference point

in SPORTS by

After going nine matches scoreless, the St. Bonaventure University women’s soccer team finally broke their drought in a 1-1 double-overtime draw against University of Richmond, putting the women at 0-9-2 on the season.

Junior midfielder Marley Jarvis scored her second goal of the season just before halftime in the 44th minute to put the Bonnies ahead 1-0. A free kick from the left bounced through the box and found the head of Jarvis, who headed it into the back of the net. Sophomore forward Bella May was credited with the assist.

Before the goal, neither team was developing much possession, trading time with the ball back and forth. Each team ended the half with three shots.

Sophomore goalkeeper Lauren Malcolm finished with nine saves for the third time this season after the Spiders pounded out 10 shots to the Bonnies two in the second half.

Richmond pushed Bonaventure hard throughout the second half to find an equalizer, but the defense was holding strong and looked like the Brown and White would find their first win of the season and first points in conference play.

The Spiders had other plans though. A turnover in the midfield led to an attack for Richmond, and senior forward Lexi Prillaman made no mistake on her shot, unleashing a rocket that flew past Malcolm’s fingertips and tied the game in the 88th minute.

Junior forward Mariah Marrero nearly won the game Bonaventure as time expired, beating the defense and getting the goalkeeper off her line, but the shot rolled in front of the goal and full time ended.

The first overtime period was equally matched, as both teams wanted to end the game to get out of the extreme heat.

Malcolm came up with two huge saves during the first and second overtime period to keep the Bonnies in the game, and Marrero got a shot on goal during the first overtime period that was saved.

Prillaman hit the crossbar in the second overtime period, and Malcolm ended the game with a diving save to conserve the tie.

The draw was the first point for the Spiders, who now sit at 0-8-1.

The Bonnies are back at home again Thursday night as they take on University of Massachusetts at 7 p.m.
