SiR stirs up the beat in debut EP

in FEATURES by

Rapper SiR (Darryl Farris) signed with Top Dawg Entertainment (T.D.E) just this year. He’s been featured on other artists’ tracks before, such as Isiah Rashaad on The Sun’s Tirade and Jay Rock’s album 90059 in 2015, according to Hip Hop DX.

SiR just released his EP titled Her Too. The six song tape is a jazzy and relaxing ambiance to listen to straight through the 19-minute duration.

The first song “New LA” features Anderson .Paak and King Mez The upbeat intro offers an airy beat and vocals. This track is ultimately a sample of Drake’s “With You” from Views. More annotations on this song from King Mez can be found on Rap Genius. This song is catchy and a great choice for an intro, partially because of Drake’s previous influence on this track.

The third track, “Don’t Call My Phone,” gives a sort of “Single Ladies” vibe. It starts out with a jarring intro of a funky guitar line as words of anger are being expressed. The walking piano line coupled with the singers and smokey main voice makes for a sound that would be at home in a 1920’s jazz club. It sounds and reads like these lyrics are coming from a woman. SiR is supporting the pain that some women go through as the girl says “don’t call my phone no more.”

“Sugar” opens up to a light beat of instrumentals with a soft voice of SiR coming in to harmonize over how he’s faithful to his “sweetest honey… waiting for [him] at home.” He can’t believe that she wants to be his girl and he wouldn’t do anything to give that privilege up. The fact that they have a relationship keeps him honest and his heart at home with her. The jazzy feeling still carries all the way through this album. The outro eases into the last track.

“W$ Boi” said as Westside Boy, is perhaps his most popular track for T.D.E. On Rap Genius he verified and annotated his entire song. The song opens up to a starry-feeling beat and reels back in when SiR comes on the track. He seems to be reflecting over some hard drums and the sounds of utopian music that has started to go wrong. “Real love is dangerous, but I never cared when it came to us,” SiR is trying to establish this sort of Romeo and Juliet romance. Living in two places at war they must come together in secret. He even says he “grew up on the other side of Figuero.”

The overall vibe of the album serves an emotional purpose. SiR breaks down a lot of the feelings he has with women and his hometown. His pledges his allegiance to the west side and also to his girl.
