The St. Bonaventure University women’s lacrosse team won their first game of the season on Saturday against Army West Point. They picked up the narrow win 12-11, and are now 1-2 on the season.

In the first period, the Bonnies jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead, getting goals from senior midfielders Taylor Fallon and Mary Maestri.

The teams then swapped 2 goals apiece. Army’s two came from junior attacker Amy Johnston and senior midfielder Erin Jollota, and SBU’s two came via LeighAnn Stauffer, a redshirt senior midfielder, and Rachel Perla, a senior attacker/midfielder, giving Bonaventure the 4-2 edge.

Army subsequently picked up four goals in a row. Trailing by two, the Bonnies netted two goals, one from sophomore midfielder Rylee Arnold and another by Fallon, to tie the game at 6-6.

Then with one second left on the clock, Army’s sophomore midfielder Manuela Cortes scored her third of the first half to give Army a 7-6 lead.

Four minutes into the second half, Stauffer scored again for the Bonnies, which tied the game 7-7.

After going back down by one, the Bonnies went on to score 5 unanswered goals over the next 22 minutes. Those goals came from senior midfielder Scarlet Jaworski, three times, Stauffer,  and another from Maestri.

The Bonnies had a 12-8 lead with 3:38 remaining.

But Army came roaring back with three goals in the following minute and a half, two of which came from Cortes again.

This cut St. Bonaventure’s once healthy lead to one with 1:08 remaining in regulation.

However, Johnston turned the ball over late, sealing the win for the Bonnies.

St. Bonaventure will play their first home game on March 4 at 11 a.m., at the Marra Athletics Fields Complex against the Siena Saints.
