From reinventing old fashion trends to creating new ones, these award-winning Hollywood films have dominated the box office and transformed wardrobes for decades.

Clueless, 1995

Nothing screams ‘90s nostalgia like the bright yellow plaid skirt-suit that Alicia Silverstone wore in the popular film, “Clueless.” As one of the most quintessential outfits of the ‘90s film era, the suit put a daring spin on the classic school-girl uniform and later inspired pop culture remakes, such as Iggy Azalea’s popular “Fancy” music video, released in 2014.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s, 1961

Audrey Hepburn peering through the windows of Tiffany and Co., donned in a black Givenchy dress paired with a pearl necklace, dark sunglasses and classic up-do hairstyle, is one of the most memorable scenes in film history. Not only did it cement Hepburn’s position as a style icon, but it also coined the term “little black dress” and made black dresses a permanent closet essential for the following generations.

Grease, 1978

The iconic lovebirds Sandy and Danny played by John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John, celebrated the dueling versatility of 1950s fashion. The musical film, which is one of the most watched of its genre to date, featured an array of classic wardrobe pieces, including the leather jacket, cardigan and flared skirt. But, as the duo sung their way into the hearts of viewers across the world during the grand finale, they rocked the most iconic looks of the musical—simple black ensembles paired with belts.

Coming to America, 1988

Playing the role of African Prince Akeem in “Coming to America,” Eddie Murphy captivated audiences as he came on screen in bold prints and tailored suits. Styled by award-winning costume designer Deborah Landis, two of Murphy’s most iconic looks featured a Jinnah cap, matching gray fur, an elaborate gold chain and an ocelot shoulder accessory. The trendsetting looks garnered numerous award nominations, including an Academy Award for Best Costume Designs, and they still remain a standing force in men’s fashion to date.
