Embrace the cold

With cold weather rapidly approaching, many students have been dreading the “s” word. Yes, I’m talking about snow.

There’s nothing quite as extraordinary as the first snowfall of the year, especially at St. Bonaventure. Our beautiful campus gets covered by a pristine layer of pure white, adding to the picturesque views.

While students and faculty alike detest the frigid winters that plague the western New York area, I think it’s one of the most exciting times of the year. Sure, the roads are terrible to drive on, and people can’t walk from one end of campus to the other without getting first-degree frostbite. However, those are just minor annoyances that distract people from enjoying the beauty of winter.

The winter months bring about fun activities like pond hockey in Bob’s Woods or playing football in the snow. Personally, I like to sit and watch the snow fall. It’s a serene and peaceful way to let the stress of school float to the back of my mind for just a few moments.

Generally, the thing people hate the most about winter is the chilling, bitter cold that rips through coats. While I have no secrets to avoiding that, I typically try to ignore the cold, and it doesn’t hurt to wear multiple layers, hats and gloves to try to conquer the cold.

Let’s not forget about one of the best parts of winter: the basketball games. Both the men’s and women’s teams are undeniably fun to watch, and it’s awesome to witness the student body band together to cheer for our fellow Bonnies. It’s as if, just for an hour or two, it’s not below freezing with wind chills outside, and we don’t all have tests we should be studying for.

For those who don’t enjoy freezing your extremities, winter is the absolute best time to read good books and enjoy even better coffee. There’s no harm in curling up in your room with the heat cranked while watching endless Netflix.

The winter does eventually become tedious after a couple months, but there’s no point in being drab about it. The best way to get through these winters is to make the best of it. Start snowball fights or go make a snowman. The winter is only as dreary as we make it, and we all came here knowing the weather would be like this.
