Professor authors Spotsylvania article

in NEWS by

“We tried to focus on a battle that civil war buffs knew about, but a facet that is often overlooked.”

Chris Mackowski, Ph.D., professor of journalism and mass communication has co-authored an article that appears in the most recent edition of Civil War Times magazine.

“Another Butchery: The Third and Final Union Attack on Spotsylvania’s ‘Bloody Angle’” is the fourth article Mackowski has written that has appeared in the magazine. The article looks into the May 18 assault during the 1864 battle of Spotsylvania Court House. The assault gets overpowered by earlier assaults that happened May 10 and 12, but it was one of the largest attacks of the campaign up until that point, said Mackowski.

Mackowski worked with his frequent co-author Kris White on the article. Both of them have served as historians for the National Park Service at Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park.

“It is still a thrill to see my byline; it doesn’t get old. It’s nothing I take for granted. I recognize what a privilege it is to tell these stories,” said Mackowski.

Mackowski said that the writing process for his article required a lot of research and going through diaries, reading accounts and talking to other historians.

“Things that Kris and I pulled together for this article would consist of diaries, journals, letters, reports these soldiers have written,” said Mackowski.

The magazine has close to 500,000 subscribers and is the oldest and largest magazine dedicated to the civil war.

The article appears in the October edition of the magazine, and is available on Kindle and in local bookstores.
