Unfortunately for the Bonaventure golf team, the end of the season came with a couple of last place finishes. After coming in 10th out of 10 schools in the Whistling Straits Intercollegiate on Oct. 13, the Bonnies finished off their 2015 fall season on Tuesday in the Dayton Flyer Invitational, finishing 15th out of 15 schools.

Junior Evan Sommer was disappointed in the way the team finished this fall season, he said.

“The past two events weren’t our best, but we know we have the potential to compete in those tournaments,” Sommer said.

The University of Detroit Mercy won the team title by five strokes with a score of 598 (+30) followed by Oakland, Youngstown State, Dayton, and Cleveland State to round out the top five. St. Bonaventure’s score of 633 (+65) fell 35 strokes behind Detroit.

Once again, senior Josh Stauffer led the Bonnies with a tie for 20th overall finish, shooting a 77 on day one followed by a 76 day two (+11 overall). Redshirt senior Darren Simons was next for the Brown and White with a tie for 26th 154 (+12). Sophomore Corey Long was in a tie for 55th, 159 (+17), with freshmen Matt Abendroth (tie for 90th with a 167 (+25), and Brent Morgan 95th with a 168 (+26) rounding out the Bonnies’ top five.

This team is capable of playing better in the spring semester, according to Sommer.

“We are looking forward to the spring because we know that we can make big things happen,” Sommer said.

Senior Patrick Milkovich was pleased with the way this team played most of the season, he said.

“I feel as though our season started out pretty well, and we started playing really well but then faltered a little bit towards the end,” Milkovich said. “We all need to work on staying out of trouble and looking more into course management.”

The Bonnies weren’t able to come away with any team titles in this fall season, a goal the team had going into the year, according to Milkovich. He said he is excited for the upcoming break from golf.

“Taking time off from a sport that you play all year round is always a good thing to clear your head,” Milkovich said. “Time away will also allow us to look back on the things we need to work out and make us hungry for the spring.”
