A big BV welcome: New EIC looks forward to this semester

When I was young, I always read the morning newspaper after my father finished it. I have always loved the idea of writing and reporting, but I never saw myself leading a newspaper one day.
And then I joined The Bona Venture, and one semester later I became one of the editors. I knew then that one day I would like to become the editor-in-chief of the paper.
That’s why I am excited for a chance to lead a staff of excellent student journalists as we continue a tradition of well-respected student writing and reporting. This semester’s staff is a group of the hardest-working and most dedicated students at St. Bonaventure. While some students spend their evenings watching Netflix or hanging out with friends, these students are writing story after story, racing to get interviews or editing photos and designing layout.
Our club’s main focus has always been a print edition, and it will continue to be so. We will continue to provide news, features, editorials and sports about all things Bonaventure.
The BV staff always strives to keep up with the ever-changing face of journalism and communication. This means you’ll see more photo galleries, video stories, filmed interviews and live tweets from us if you follow us on social media or check out our website.
However, the fundamental principle of The Bona Venture has always been to provide a way for college students to learn professional-level journalism skills.
And no matter the shifts in communication, that all comes down to the same principles:
Good reporting and good writing.
No matter if writing a 1,000-word feature story or a 140-character tweet, a journalist must know how to craft his or her work in a way that is effective, grammatically sound and accurate. Being able to gather information, analyze it and communicate it well is the basis of all jobs in the field of communications.
That’s been the goal of BV staffs since 1926, and it still is today. We strive to provide accurate and complete stories relevant to current students, alumni and faculty and staff.
Thanks to a donation, we will be able to do this every week. For 13 Fridays in the semester, newsstands around campus and in local restaurants and libraries will be brimming with copies of The BV just waiting to be read.
So I encourage you to pick up a copy every week and look through it. The BV staff works numerous hours Wednesday night and throughout the whole week to put together editions we are excited to share with our readers.
But not only do we encourage you to read the paper, we also would like to hear what you think about what we’re doing. We are committed to accuracy, so if something isn’t right, let us know. If there is something you like, make sure we hear about it. Tweet at us, message us on Facebook, send us an email or talk to us in person.
We aren’t hard to pick out of a crowd. We’re the students who always look exhausted on Thursdays, but who still are in a huge hurry to get somewhere.
That’s because we are already working on the next week’s edition.

Amelia Kibbe is the Editor-in-Chief of The Bona Venture.
