So long and thanks for all the fish

The time I’ve spent at The BV can’t be matched. I’ll never again experience the painfully long Wednesday nights, the hassle of hunting down writers to make sure stories get in on time, or battle with the beast that is InDesign for hours on end. Editorial positions are stressful, tiring and undoubtedly all consuming, but as I distance myself from the insane lifestyle of a BV editor, the happy memories are what remain.
While I learned a lot and gained skills that I wouldn’t have without joining The BV, the friendships I made are my greatest takeaway. The memories I share with these people are some of my best at Bonaventure.
The old newsroom, may it rest in peace, became our playground. Well, we made it that way, because if we didn’t take breaks to fool around I’m pretty sure our brains would have turned to mush on Wednesday nights. The archives room became our own personal newspaper-filled ball pit. We really did roll around on stacks of newspapers, and it was the best early morning idea that Heather, Harrison and I ever had.
The beginning of new semesters always brought adventure. It’s one of the first late nights of the semester, and what do we do? Build a kick-ass blanket fort and have a sleepover, of course. The image of Nate’s face peaking through the fort is forever burned in my mind (and saved on Heather’s phone), and the childish pride we all felt in building the fort is unforgettable, much like the back pain we woke up with the next morning.
Various celebrations led to some memorable moments, too. In particular, locking a distraught Kevin Rogers in the desking room while not so secretly decorating the newsroom at 11:55 p.m. We managed to throw him a great birthday party in those five minutes. There were balloons.
The good times had by all in the newsroom also extended far beyond it. Our many 1 a.m. Wal-Mart trips, the 2 a.m. visits to Tim Horton’s where the night shift worker always sleeps (just fyi) and trips like the one to the haunted hayride, where I’ve never seen Taylor jump so high out of fright, will be what I miss most.
High stress levels and sleep deprivation are part of The BV editor package, but the package as a whole is so much more. I am lucky enough to walk away from The BV with a handful of people like Heather Monahan, Kevin Rogers, Taylor Nigrelli, Harrison Leone and Nate West. I consider them family. To me, that’s more important than any skill, and I thank The BV.
The last of us are preparing to go our separate ways and face the big, fat unknown, but fortunately Heather and Kevin did it first (thanks guys), and they turned out alright, so I’m sure we will, too.
