Phun with Philosophy

Hello, readers of The Bona Venture! Philosophy Club has a brief announcement. We’ll be around to greet you in the BV with a regular column now, but need a little help. While we could talk on and on about philosophy, as we often like to do, we’d love some input from others in the BonaBubble — specifically questions.

We all have questions. What time is class? Who will die in the next episode of The Walking Dead? In many ways, asking questions expresses our humanity. It is partly how we earned our name, since “homo sapiens” means “wise man.” We ask our friends some questions and Google others. Some affect our healt, many affect our relationships, some have consequences and others are just for fun.

Now and then, we encounter a particularly tough question to answer. We can all look up class times, and experts can answer questions about the average time we spend on Facebook. But we have a harder time answering, “What is time?” The longer we go through life, we may find more of these questions popping up. Who am I? What makes life meaningful? What’s the right thing to do? These questions don’t have clear answers. Many lead to more questions. Some follow us like shadows for our whole lives or vex us like flies on a summer afternoon.

Philosophy can help with these “philosophical” questions. And that’s where you come in. At Philosophy Club, we love talking about these issues and we’d like to share some of our thoughts. So we propose the following: Ask us your philosophical questions. Each column we’ll try to give some answers, drawing from whatever resources we can, from professional and historic thinkers and scientists to our own experience and “wit.”

If you’re interested, please e-mail your question to SBUPhilosophyClub@gmail.com or post it to the Philosophy Club wall on the St. Bonaventure Philosophy Club Facebook page. We’ll look at them all as a group and answer one or two in the BV each time.

We are excited to read your questions and explore some answers.
