Students need to play a part in the community

This is the beginning of my eighth semester at Bona’s, and I can tell you, I’ve had an amazing Bonaventure experience. That being said, I’m finding myself scrambling to complete my Bonaventure bucket list (Yes, the one from my freshman year.)

It’s important for students to be a part of the community their college is in. I’m guilty of not doing enough, and honestly, I regret it.

I see a lot of tweets and yaks from people around here about being bored and not having enough to do, but there is enough. Some of my closest friends have chosen to go this semester without a TV in their abode, and it’s opened our collective eyes to what this place really does offer. There are parks galore around here. Nothing will bring out your inner child more than having a contest to see who can jump the farthest off a swing, or who can race around the monkey bars the fastest. The Town of Allegheny Town Hall Park has a very cool dome climber, which makes for a good way to spend a few free hours.

There’s also a very unrecognized cuisine scene here. At the very beginning of this year, my friend and I went to Angees, that Italian place you’ve probably seen driving. It has some good pizza that I recommend. The same friend spent his summer working on campus and found a great burger place called Red and Trudy’s restaurant, if you’re in to that kind of thing.

If you’re broke, not into hiking and don’t find fun in a jungle gym, there’s still more you can do, but you can find it on your own. Visit the local tourism website, or take to social media to find something that piques your interests. The most important takeaway from this should be to become a part of the community. The people of the surrounding communities have  gratefully accepted us, and we need to do what we can to make their hometown a pleasant place to live.

These are some simple ideas, but I think you get my gist. There’s plenty to do around this town if you’re bored. I’ve spent too much time here sitting around complaining about being bored, and not enough enjoying where I go to school. It may be too late for me, but you can be save yourself from any ensuing ennui.
