I love the 90’s

For the past few months, on almost all of the online shops and fashion websites I have visited I have been bombarded with ‘90s inspiration. It was all over the runways this year, pulling from the grunge trend that went from the street with Kurt Cobain, to high-fashion with Marc Jacobs’ collection for Perry Ellis spring/summer 1993 (which got Jacobs fired).

Fall is a great time to channel grunge because the look is all about comfort, oversized shapes and using heavy fabrics. Here is how you can channel your inner Seattle underground band member.

One of the easiest ways to incorporate the grunge trend is with an oversized flannel (which is easy to find for a good price in the men’s section at any thrift store). Wear it unbuttoned over a big band t-shirt with some jeans. Or, girls can tie it around their waists over a loose solid-colored maxi dress or skirt to mix the minimalism and grunge trends of the ‘90s.

Large cardigans and sweaters are also easy and comfortable ways to add some grunge to your look and to keep you warm. Pair the knit with a pair of slimmer jeans to help balance out the looseness of the top of your outfit, or girls can again pair the cardigan or sweater with a dress (baby-doll shaped to channel Courtney Love) or skirt. Dark floral patterns help capture the moodiness of the grunge era.

For shoes, Doc Martens are a popular pick and can be paired with anything. Go for black for a classic look or make a statement with a floral pair. Converse sneakers also give off a grunge vibe, but they look even cooler after they are worn-in and a bit dirty for a lived-in, beat-up look.

Grunge was about going against the mainstream, going against fashion (which makes it ironic that grunge is a fashion trend) and about not caring what you wore. The key is to not look like you are putting too much effort into your look.
