The Bald for Bucks event, hosted by the St. Bonaventure University’s sophomore class raised a total of $9,850 for cancer research as of Tuesday, pleasing both class officers and students involved, according to the class president, J.W. Cook.

More than 60 people came on Saturday to get their hair cut or heads shaved. Three hair salons and one student volunteered their time and skills to help cut hair.

Class secretary, Jessica Laursen, said the turnout was amazing and the class officers were grateful to and inspired by all the organizations and volunteers who came out to help. Laursen’s grandfather, Louis Kingsbury, traveled from Caledonia, a town outside of Rochester, to participate in shaving his head for the event.

“I was so inspired by the generosity of our Bonaventure family and everyone that shaved their head without hesitation,” added Laursen.

The BonaWire live tweeted the event, encouraging social media users to get involved, said Cook. Dakota Ward,  sophomore journalism and mass communication major, contributed as an emcee for the event, asking audience members to participate and donate money to the cause on the spot.

“The audience was really enjoying themselves and seemed to be having a great time while supporting a great cause,” commented Ward.

Sophomore music major and participant, Conor Hynes also shaved his head for the cause and was thrilled with the organization of the event and how enjoyable it was even for those who did not cut or shave their hair.

“I definitely feel a strong breeze now,” said Cook about his newly shaved head.
