As all students know, midterm break is approaching, and the energy level on campus has diminished significantly as nearly everyone has spent most of their time studying for midterm exams. Whether it’s a multiple choice exam, midterm paper, or class-long presentation, students have been stepping up their study game and working tirelessly to get the best marks possible.

Sarah Gebhardt, a freshman business major, has kept busy with schoolwork during the past couple of weeks.

“I’m nervous and stressed because all my exams are on the same day, so I have to manage my time wisely for studying,” Gebhardt said. “If there are definitions I need to remember, I write them out about ten times for each definition and then I make flash cards.”

It’s especially important for freshmen to learn how to manage time and master study habits because this is their first big college exam experience. Upperclassmen can offer valuable tips and tricks to younger students.

Maggie Schunk, a junior education major, explained the importance of learning how to prepare for big exams.

“Time management and figuring out which tests you have to study for more and how much time to spend on each one are important habits to use when preparing for midterms,” Schunk said.

Being in the library for hours on end can get boring after a while, so there are alternative places to study. The Thomas Merton Center, which is open 24 hours, is a great place to be when trying to focus for big exams. Other places include Café La Verna or even empty classrooms.

With break coming up, students are looking forward to going back home for a few days to see their families and friends.  Those staying on campus should consider an overnight trip to Mt. Irenaeus, where students and faculty come together to learn about Franciscan life.

“I’m excited to go home and relax and get a break, but I know it’s going to go by fast,” Schunk said.
