Typically, when box office smashes make a sequel they never turn out to be as favorable as the first movie. “22 Jump Street” does not fall into this category. However, it comes close. The movie is set up like the first film “21 Jump Street.” Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum play two detectives who have to investigate drug activity in an academic environment. So, yes – exactly the same set up as the first one. To understand the sequel, it may be of some importance to watch the first film – however, not vital.

Gabby Hurley, a sophomore finance major, explained that it was necessary to watch the first film before watching the new one.

“I was with one of my friends who hadn’t seen 21 Jump Street, and she seemed lost in the beginning of the movie,” Hurley said. “She kept asking me questions. It was distracting to say the least. I think that she would have enjoyed it more fully if she had watched the first one.”

The main difference is that instead of going to high school to bust a drug dealer, they go to college. Hurley commented on the college aspect of the film.

“I didn’t think it was as good as the first one, but I liked how it was relevant to the college lifestyle in some ways,” Hurley said. “It made me miss Bonas a little bit.”

Throughout the entire movie, Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum continue their antics creating hilarious situations.

Jason Liao, sophomore biology major, spoke highly of the film.

“It was pretty good for a sequel I thought,” Liao said. “My favorite part of the movie was when Channing Tatum discovered that Jonah Hill was in a relationship with the captain’s daughter.”

The odd relationship between the characters was dominant throughout the course of the film. They fought with each other as if they were in a relationship. Typically, the fights consisted of petty quarrels involving one being jealous of the other spending time with someone else. Bonaventure Akinlosotu, a sophomore political science major, gave his opinion on Tatum and Hill’s relationship.

“It was an okay movie,” Said Akinlosotu. “It was too affectionate for me though. They really played out the bromance that the detectives had in the movie. It was funny, but kind of annoying. Still, it made me laugh.”

Like most action/comedy films, 22 Jump Street ended explosively. The twist in the plot made the film lively, and the movie came together perfectly.

“The end was crazy though. I didn’t see it coming,” said Akinlosotu.

Overall, “22 Jump Street” was a gut-busting film, with witty dialog and suspenseful action scenes. The film was the top comedy of the summer. This film is highly recommended for someone who is looking for a laugh. It’s the perfect movie to sit down with some friends and relax this semester.
