Bonnies down La Salle

The St. Bonaventure men’s tennis team swept La Salle, 7-0, Saturday, lost to Youngstown State, 7-0, Sunday and fell to Little Three rival Niagara, 6-1, Tuesday. Saturday’s women’s match against La Salle was cancelled.

Senior Elliot Fanshel won the only point for the Bonnies (5-15, 1-3) in Tuesday’s match versus the Purple Eagles.

He defeated junior Michael Elortegui, 6-1, 6-3, in first singles. Sophomore Eduardo Irizarry and senior Ramazan Nureev forced third sets in their matches before losing. Irizarry fell, 6-4, 2-6, 7-5, in second singles to junior Inaki Belloso, and Nureev lost, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3, in third singles to junior David Raymond.

On Sunday, Nureev and Fanshel won the only match for Bona’s against the Penguins on Senior Day at the SBU Fitness Center in Olean. They won 8-6 in first doubles over junior Dawoud Kabli and senior Sebastian Hagn.

Irizarry and junior Javier Ortiz forced third sets before losing their singles matches. Irizarry fell, 5-7, 7-5, 6-1, in second singles to junior Silviu Mistreanu, while Ortiz lost, 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, in fourth singles to senior Max Schmerin.

The Bonnies won all nine matches on Saturday against the Explorers at the SBU Fitness Center.

Fanshel and Nureev won 8-4 in first doubles against senior Chas Berenato and freshman Brian Balico. Fanshel bested Berenato, 6-4, 6-3, in first singles, while Nureev topped junior Robert Kasinow, 6-0, 6-2, in third singles.

Ortiz and Irizarry knocked off Kasinow and junior Dale Fetterman 8-2 in second doubles. Irizarry beat Fetterman, 6-1, 6-2, in second singles, while Ortiz defeated Balico, 6-2, 6-4, in fourth singles.

Freshman Timothy DeSanto and junior Trevor Haskell won 8-5 in third doubles over junior Thomas MacLeod and freshman Mark Robinson. Haskell defeated Robinson, 7-5, 6-3, in sixth singles. Sophomore Celso de Vera Rehberger grabbed a win in fifth doubles over MacLeod, 6-3, 6-0.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams will travel to Indiana-Purdue Fort Wayne on Saturday and Dayton on Sunday.
