Sports editor says goodbye

It’s hard to believe my time as sports editor has come to an end. Where have the last 12 weeks gone?

Before coming to Bona’s, if someone had told me I would be writing for the campus newspaper I would have laughed in his or her face.

It’s amazing how quickly things change.

My time at the BV began the fall of my sophomore year, writing for the features section under the insistence of then-assistant editor Alexandra Salerno. I wrote a couple stories and loved the process.

As I became more involved, I wanted to try out other sections — in particular, sports. Specifically, I wanted to be the baseball beat writer. All my life, my dad has coached some sort of baseball, whether it was Little League, high school or Division III. I like to say I inherited the love of the game from him, as I was practically raised on the baseball diamond.

With the support of my friends, I nervously inquired to write for the sports section. The spring 2011 team, headed by then-sports editor Sam Wilson, welcomed me with open arms. I’ll never forget the moment then-sports assignment editor, Kyle Zamiara, assigned me my first sports story.

“Men’s rugby,” he told a very stunned me over the phone. I told him there must be some mistake. I signed up to write for baseball and baseball alone. He reassured me that I would one day get to write for baseball, but had to work my way up like everyone else.

I nervously interviewed Head Coach Clarence Picard in my first official sports interview. Immediately, Coach Picard made me feel at ease, and I learned so much in that one sitting.

In the spring of 2012, I finally got my chance to cover the baseball team, and I was ecstatic.

I have had the pleasure of knowing baseball Head Coach Larry Sudbrook since I was 12 years old. He is the only coach, besides my father, who has taught me so much about American’s favorite pastime.

His passion for baseball made it so easy to interview him as well as his players each week. So, thank you, Coach Sudbrook, for letting me invade your office each week to talk a little baseball.

That same spring, I was asked to move up and become assistant sports editor for the fall 2012 semester. I tearfully accepted, knowing full well I would one day take on the responsibility of sports editor.

It has truly been an honor to be a part of the sports department for four semesters. I’ve gotten the opportunity to cover the 2012 Atlantic 10 Men’s Basketball Championship in Atlantic City as well as the team’s NCAA trip to Nashville, Tenn. This year, I had the pleasure of covering the 2012-13 women’s basketball team and loved every minute of it. With that being said, thank you to every single coach and player I have ever had the pleasure of interviewing.

Thank you to former Editor-in-Chief Tyler Diedrich for being the best mentor a girl could ask for and always believing in me. Also, thank you to current Editor-in-Chief Mary Best for her constant guidance and support.

Thank you to my mom and dad for making me the woman I am today. Thank you to my Mom Mom and Aunt Louise who read all of my stories without fail and to the rest of my wonderful family and friends for always supporting me in all that I do.

Last but certainly not least, best wishes and good luck to the upcoming talented sports staff of Taylor Nigrelli, Harrison Leone and Zachary Waltz. BV Sports could not be in better hands.
